Hey all,

Just got a reconditioned type 9 5 speed from Tickover to replace my Capri one & it was sent over to Old Ford Autos to install. They called me & said there should be a spring for the gear lever which springs the gearbox back into neutral from 5th gear & it's not doing it as the recon gearbox hasn't got it or isn't aligned properly. Clive @ Tickover says that the Type 9's changed slightly & the later one's fitted to Capri's did not have the spring. My 2.0 Capri is an '82 & it was probably one of the earliest 5 speed cars.

Has anybody has this issue before? Is there a spring mechanism?

Oh dear Kris, wish I could help matey.
Hopefully someone out there will shed some light on it.

If you don't have any luck locally, give Neil at Caprisport a bell. He know's his way around a Capri for sure.

Cheers Kev.

Having made a few phone calls, I believe the spring in question is the gear lever return spring, which seems to be on most gearboxes, and should return the gearbox to the middle neutral position if you move it from side to side. I'm going to go down to Old Ford after work & find out what it's like. At this point, not too happy with Clive @ Tickover....

Kev, please don't introduce me to new Capri sites - I've just seen Caprisport do very nice looking strut braces and bonnet gas struts!

Adding to my list of further modifications.......

No worries Kris, as I've said before, modifing our Capris is addictive ! I've been adding and taking bits off my Mk1 for the past 25 years !!
Yes, Caprisport do sell some nice stuff.

Hope you get your Capper back on the road before the Easter break.

Kev.

Thanks Kev, I've left the boys at Old Ford to correct it, popped in there after work last night. There's no way I could live with the gear lever behaving the way it was. Thankfully Chris & Mick at Old Ford will be correcting it, but now extra labour cost for them to remove out of the car & sort :x . Doesn't look like there were any further issues to sort, & I had a sneak preview at my new Red Dot discs - that cheered me up! They look really nice, even through the Ford wheels!

Hope to have it back by early next week, just before start of Easter, and of course, Boxhill meet
