Hey all,

Ever since I bought my car I have had a whiny gearbox. It's never affected the car, slick gearchanges & drives ok, but today I dropped it off at Old Ford Autos to sort out my brake upgrade, polybushing front end & sort what I have now found out to be a bent brake backplate which has pushed the hub inward, On the way there I noticed 3rd gear is especially whiny plus there's a tapping noise, but only in 3rd. Is this imminent gearbox failure or just needs gearbox oil top up?

I fear the worst for it, so if I need the gearbox rebuilt how much is this likely to cost?

Hi Kris,

Glad you've found Old Ford Autos helpful, I've never been there myself, but think they are probably a friendly knowledgable lot.
You did do some damage then when you hit the kerb!
I'm no gearbox expert, but if it's whining it's usually the bearings being worn. Low oil level or wrong grade of oil won't do the box any favours either. When it starts jumping out of gear under load it's deffo a time for re-build or exchange.

If you want some good advice you could always email Clive at Tickover.....www.tickover.co.uk.....he usually emails back fairly quickly.
I wouldn't be surprised if they've got a half decent gearbox sitting on a shelf just waiting to be fitted. I know it all boils down to money etc, but you might find cheaper to exchange your box for another one, depends how bad your's is I suppose. Tickover do work on Saturday's (and yes, I know it's a bit of a trek for you) but may be worth a try?.......other than that it's a gearbox company for an overhaul quote?
Tickover will let you stay with your Capri while they work on it.
Just keep out of the way.....lol. :)

Hi Kev,

Thanks for the advice, I'll find out what the guys at Old ford Autos say first when i get it back, at least Tickover to a gearbox overhaul kit.

I do have a Type 9 gearbox (well, 2, but one's broke) sitting in my house right now, since that came out of my P100, only problem is that was fitted to a 2.9 Cologne V6, not a Pinto. should be a straight swap. I think I will have mine overhauled as a precaution, not only do I want to get to CCI with you guys, but I do drive an average of 175-200 miles a week to work!

I'm having a **** time again with cars, but always looking on the positive side, & can't wait to get the car back & feel what's like, plus work on some other bits & pieces with it. The enthusiasm wavers, but doesn't die!
