The heater controls are only cable operated, one to the 'hot/cold' slide control, the other to the 'up/down' directional control. These operate flaps inside the heater box. Most likely cause of one sticking is that it has become stuck between the firewall shelf and the heater slide control plate behind the dash. First step, take the radio out and have a gander through the gap. You should be able to see if there is anything caught. Also, get your ears down near the heater box (where the heat exits each side of the tunnel, just behind the clock) then operate the slide control fairly sharpish, you should hear the flap(s) in the heater box move and 'slap' against the inside of the box itself. If not, it may be that one of the flaps has become dislodged. They are only held in place by small sort of hinge bits attached to the flaps. If this is the case, it's heater box out time I'm afraid, unless you can feel the flap is dislodged by poking your fingers into those heat exits down near the tunnel/clock.
