Anybody know what process Ford used to produce their matte black bumpers?

I don't know what the original process was but if you can get them prepped to a good smooth surface it shouldn't be too hard to get them painted or powder coated to look like the original finish. I just did mine with satin black out of a can and it looks ok (pics on page 2)

but if you want concours standard I suppose you need to replicate the original finish exactly?

Thanks for your ideas. I've been following your project and thought what a great improvement you made to the bumper.

My rear bumper got damaged recently and the local body shop didn't have much confidence that they could get the right finish. As my car is all original I wanted it as near the Ford finish as possible. In the end I sent the bumper to Restore-A-Ford. If anybody can make it look as Ford intended I think they can.

Hoping to get it back very soon. Don't want another smack up the rear with no protection.
